چکیده

In this contribution we report our recent investigation of the gas metallicity in active galactic nuclei and its dependence on luminosity and redshift. We compile large spectroscopic datasets of broad-line and narrowline AGNs, and compare them with the results of our photoionization models. Through the analysis of both the broad and the narrow emission-line regions, we find that: (1) for a given luminosity, there is no redshift dependence of the gas metallicity; (2) for a given redshift, there is a significant correlation between gas metallicity and luminosity; (3) the luminosity-metallicity relation does no show any evolution in the redshift range 2 ∼< z ∼< 4.

Gas Metallicity in the Narrow-Line Regions of High-Redshift Active Galactic Nuclei

We analyze optical (UV rest-frame) spectra of X-ray selected narrow-line QSOs at redshift 1.5 <∼ z <∼ 3.7 found in the Chandra Deep Field South and of narrow-line radio galaxies at redshift 1.2 <∼ z <∼ 3.8 to investigate the gas metallicity of the narrow-line regions and their evolution in this redshift range. Such spectra are also compared with UV spectra of local Seyfert 2 galaxies. The obser...

Emission-line diagnostics of low-metallicity active galactic nuclei

Current emission-line-based estimates of the metallicity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at both high and low redshifts indicate that AGN have predominantly solar-to-supersolar metallicities. This leads to the question: do low-metallicity AGN exist? In this paper, we use photoionization models to examine the effects of metallicity variations on the narrow emission-lines from an AGN. We explore ...

Metallicities and Abundance Ratios from Quasar Broad Emission Lines

The broad emission lines (BELs) of quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are important diagnostics of the relative abundances and overall metallicity in the gas. Here we present new theoretical predictions for several UV BELs. We focus specifically on the relative nitrogen abundance as a metallicity indicator, based on the expected secondary enrichment of nitrogen at metallicities Z & 0.2 Z...

Dynamical and chemical effects of FR II radio sources on the intra - cluster medium

We investigate the effects of intermittent strong jets from an Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) of a massive galaxy in the core of a cool core galaxy cluster, on the dynamics and metal distribution of the intra-cluster medium (ICM). We use a simple model for the metal distribution within the host galaxy which includes metal injection via star formation. We carry out 2D axisymmetric hydrodynamic sim...

The role of active galactic nuclei in galaxy formation

We use Monte-Carlo Markov chain techniques to constrain acceptable parameter regions for the Munich L-Galaxies semi-analytic galaxy formation model. Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is required to limit star-formation in the most massive galaxies. However, we show that the introduction of tidal stripping of dwarf galaxies as they fall into and merge with their host systems can lead to...
